Casualty Information No 81

In this letter we focus on bunkering practices, the consequences of bad or off-spec bunkers, and precautionary actions to minimize the risk of engine breakdown.

Between 1998 and 2009 NHC has registered 43 claims with damage repairs, at a cost of USD 32 million, all related to bunker issues. The whole area of bunkering is comprehensive, but owner's exposure starts when bunkers are ordered and doesn't end before emissions emerge through your funnel. On board, you are exposed to both quality and quantity issues, but this letter will focus on quality and in brief discuss three steps to minimize the risks your ship is exposed to.
